How to Track ChatGPT and AI Assistant Traffic in GA4 (2026)

Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot for recommendations before they ever reach a search results page. When one of those answers links to your site, you want to know: how many visitors came that way, what did they read, and did any of them become leads? Google Analytics 4 can answer most of this, provided you know where AI traffic lands in its reports and where it hides.

This guide explains how AI assistant visits appear in GA4, the gaps you need to allow for, and a simple setup that ties AI visits to enquiries.

How AI Assistant Visits Reach Your Site

An AI assistant sends you a visitor when its answer cites or links your page and the person clicks. What GA4 records depends on what arrives with that click:

  • A referrer, the address of the page the visitor came from, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. Browsers send it on most ordinary link clicks.
  • UTM parameters in the link itself. ChatGPT, for example, adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows. Our own server logs record hundreds of requests arriving with that tag.
  • Nothing at all, for example when a link is copied from an app into a browser. GA4 then has to call the visit Direct.

So GA4 will catch a good share of AI visits, but never all of them. That matters when you compare AI traffic with other channels.

The AI Assistant Channel in GA4

In 2026 Google added an AI Assistant channel to GA4's default channel group, alongside Organic Search, Direct, Referral and the rest. When GA4 recognises a session as coming from an AI assistant, it groups it there automatically. You will see it under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition when the primary dimension is set to "Session default channel group". It appears in our own property, which is how we first noticed it.

Three caveats come with it:

  1. It is not retroactive. Sessions before the change stay where they were classified, usually Referral. A trend chart spanning the change will show AI traffic "starting" on that date.
  2. Coverage depends on Google's list of recognised sources, and Google has not published it in full. Check Session source / medium for sources such as perplexity.ai, claude.ai or copilot.microsoft.com still sitting under Referral.
  3. Google's own AI features are not in it. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive from google.com and are counted as Organic Search, mixed with normal results.

Build a Custom Channel Group You Control

Default channel groups cannot be edited, but GA4 lets you create a custom one that applies to your reports, including past data. Under Admin → Data display → Channel groups, copy the default group and add a channel called, for example, "AI assistants". Use a condition on Session source matching a regular expression such as:

chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot|deepseek|grok|meta\.ai

Then move the new channel above Referral. GA4 assigns each session to the first channel whose conditions match, so a channel placed below Referral will never receive anything. Review the regex every few months, because new assistants appear and existing ones change their domains.

Connect AI Visits to Leads, Not Just Sessions

Sessions are interesting. Enquiries pay the bills. To see whether AI visitors convert:

  • Mark your lead actions as key events. Form submissions, click-to-call and WhatsApp clicks are the usual ones. GA4 calls these "key events"; the older terms "goals" and "conversions" refer to Universal Analytics and Google Ads respectively.
  • Compare key-event rate by channel in the Traffic acquisition report. A small AI channel with a high key-event rate is a reason to invest in the content those visitors land on.
  • Check landing pages. Add "Landing page + query string" as a secondary dimension to see which pages assistants send people to. They often point at pricing, comparison or how-to pages rather than the home page.
  • Store the source with the lead. Capture utm_source and the referrer in a hidden form field so your CRM knows that this enquiry came from ChatGPT, even if the GA4 session is lost. Tag your own campaign links consistently with the UTM Link Builder so they cannot be confused with AI referrals.

Why Your AI Numbers Will Undercount

Treat GA4's AI figures as a floor, not a total. Several things push them down:

  • Consent. If your site loads Analytics only after a visitor accepts cookies, which is the right approach under a consent-first policy, every visitor who declines is invisible to GA4 whatever channel they came from. On our own site, switching GA4 to load only after consent cut recorded sessions sharply in a single day, while Search Console showed clicks from Google holding steady.
  • Missing referrers. App-to-browser hand-offs and some privacy settings strip the referrer, so the visit lands in Direct.
  • Answers without clicks. Often the assistant answers the question and the person never visits. That influence is real, since they may search for your brand later, but no analytics tool can attribute it.
  • Google's AI features are folded into Organic Search, as noted above.

Cross-Check With Two Other Sources

Search Console

Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's overall search traffic, in the Performance report under the Web search type. You cannot filter them out separately, but a rise in impressions for long, question-style queries is often a sign your pages are being used in these features.

Server or CDN logs

Your web server records every request, consented or not. Counting requests whose referrer or utm_source names an AI assistant gives a consent-independent view of AI referrals. The same logs show whether assistants' crawlers can reach you at all. The AI Crawler Checker tests your robots.txt for them. Be careful with logs, though: automated agents can arrive with AI-tagged links too, so look for repeated, page-after-page patterns before counting every hit as a person.

A Monthly AI Traffic Review

  1. Open Traffic acquisition with your custom channel group and note sessions and key events from AI assistants.
  2. List the top landing pages for that channel, and improve or expand them.
  3. Check Session source / medium for new AI sources your regex misses.
  4. Compare with CRM leads tagged as coming from AI sources.
  5. Check Search Console for growth in question-style queries.
  6. Re-run the crawler check after any robots.txt, CDN or firewall change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does ChatGPT traffic show up in GA4?

Sessions GA4 recognises as coming from ChatGPT are grouped in the AI Assistant default channel. Earlier visits, and any GA4 does not recognise, usually appear as Referral with chatgpt.com as the source. Visits with no referrer fall into Direct.

Is traffic from Google AI Overviews counted as AI Assistant traffic?

No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode come from google.com and are counted as Organic Search together with ordinary results. Search Console includes them in the Web search performance totals without a separate filter.

Why does GA4 show less AI traffic than my server logs?

GA4 only records visitors whose browser runs the Analytics tag, so visitors who decline cookies on a consent-first site are not counted. Server logs record every request, including some automated agents, so the true human figure usually lies between the two.

Can I see which pages ChatGPT or Perplexity send visitors to?

Yes. In the Traffic acquisition report, filter to the AI channel or the assistant's source and add Landing page as a secondary dimension. These pages are often pricing, comparison or how-to content.

How do I count leads that came from AI assistants?

Mark form submissions and click-to-contact actions as key events in GA4 and compare them by channel. For a record that survives consent and attribution gaps, also save the referrer and UTM source with each enquiry in your CRM.
